Kit Digital: What It Is, Where It Stands and How to Prepare

Kit Digital is a Spanish government programme designed to help small businesses and autónomos digitalise. Funded through the EU’s recovery funds, it has offered vouchers (bonos digitales) to help pay for things like websites, e-commerce, social media management, online customer management and digital invoicing.

Many expat business owners in Spain have heard of it but are unsure whether they qualify or whether it is still available. Here is a plain-English overview. Details change, so always check the official sources before making decisions.

How Kit Digital works

The programme has been managed by Red.es through the Acelera pyme platform. In general terms:

  1. Eligible businesses apply for a digital voucher, with the amount depending on the size of the business (number of employees).
  2. Businesses complete a self-assessment of their digital maturity.
  3. Once approved, they choose solutions from authorised providers known as agentes digitalizadores (digitalisation agents).
  4. The provider delivers the solution — for example, a website or social media management — and the voucher covers some or all of the cost.

Vouchers for the smallest businesses and autónomos have been worth a few thousand euros, depending on the call and segment.

What solutions has it covered?

Categories have included:

  • Websites and internet presence.
  • E-commerce.
  • Social media management.
  • Customer management (CRM).
  • Business intelligence and analytics.
  • Process management.
  • Electronic invoicing.
  • Virtual office and secure communications.
  • Cybersecurity.

Who has been eligible?

Requirements have varied by call, but have typically included being registered as a business or autónomo in Spain, meeting size thresholds, being up to date with tax and Social Security obligations, and not exceeding limits on certain state aid. Nationality is not generally the issue; being properly registered and compliant in Spain is.

Where does it stand now?

This is the key question, and the honest answer is that it depends on when you read this. Calls for applications open and close, and funds are allocated over time. As of autumn 2026, reports indicate there is no open call for new applications, and no confirmed date for a new one.

Before acting, check:

  • The official Acelera pyme website.
  • Red.es announcements.
  • Your gestor, who will usually know the latest position.

Beware of misleading offers

The popularity of Kit Digital has attracted some aggressive and misleading sales tactics. Be cautious of:

  • Unsolicited calls claiming you have been “awarded” a grant.
  • Pressure to sign quickly.
  • Requests for login details to your Social Security or tax accounts without a clear explanation.
  • Providers who cannot show they are authorised digitalisation agents.

If in doubt, check with your gestor and the official websites.

How to be ready for future programmes

Whether or not Kit Digital reopens, Spain and the EU regularly offer support for small business digitalisation, sometimes at regional level through bodies such as regional development agencies. To be ready:

  1. Keep your tax and Social Security affairs up to date. Being compliant is almost always a requirement.
  2. Have your digital certificate (certificado digital) set up. Many applications require it.
  3. Know what you need. Have a clear idea of which digital improvements would make the biggest difference: a new website, a webshop, a CRM, better social media.
  4. Speak to your gestor about regional and national programmes.

Do not wait for a grant to get started

Grants are welcome, but waiting months for a programme that may or may not reopen can cost more in lost customers than the grant is worth. Many essential steps — a Google Business Profile, WhatsApp Business and consistent social media — cost little or nothing. And with Verifactu on the horizon, now is a good time to look at your invoicing and systems too (see our Verifactu guide).
